On the ground

We are involved in delivering comprehensive healthcare, including essential medical services and mental health support. In each region, our approach is tailored to the unique challenges faced by communities impacted by conflict and adversity, aiming to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.

IRAQ

Since the tragic events of the 2014 genocide, STEP IN has been on the ground, working with and alongside displaced communities. Our programs span from essential preventive care to primary healthcare, with a strong focus on providing mental health services that are often scarce.

Recognising the need for holistic healthcare, we’ve integrated important physiotherapy programs for both adults and children.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our preventive health strategies were broadened and intertwined with projects specifically aimed at creating livelihood opportunities for women, reinforcing our dedication to the community’s resilience and health.

SYRIA

In Aleppo’s war-torn setting, STEP IN, alongside a local partner, has a focus on providing vital health services. The combined efforts are geared towards delivering primary and preventive healthcare to those impacted by the conflict.

Ukraine

When the conflict in Ukraine flared up, it hit close to home for STEP IN, with many of our former colleagues directly impacted. We swiftly responded, focusing on the physical and mental well-being of those affected. A key initiative was establishing the Border Crossing Crisis Intervention Point in Malyi Bereznyi at the conflict’s outset, providing essential services and a haven for those entering Slovakia. We’ve also ensured the delivery of vital medical supplies to Ukrainian healthcare facilities, guided by our assessments on the ground.

Our Mobile Medical Teams are serving areas where healthcare is stretched thin, supporting both displaced individuals and local communities. In addition to these efforts, a crucial aspect of our work in Ukraine is our comprehensive mental health program. This program is woven into all our services, addressing mental health needs from community-wide support to individual psychotherapies. Alongside this, our specialized Mobile Training Team imparts essential training in polytrauma care, psychological first aid, and medical first aid, especially in eastern Ukraine’s conflict zones.
